Clair grew up with a peculiar mix of adoration and terror; offsetting the constant drilling and testing and studying he went through, he occasionally would be completely coddled and swathed by his father -- one day he wouldn't be allowed to even get water for himself; the next, he'd be sent on a gauntlet through the slums before he'd be allowed to drink.
3. Till the day he dies, Clair will continue to occasionally address Ian and Mitchal, especially for big do-or-die situations. Most of the goons have been briefed to let this go, with the understanding that Giovanni will deal personally with anyone who a) calls him on it, b) mocks him for it or c) suggests he lets it go.
