The fanfic I've read has done a lot better job of characterization than the actual game, I must admit. And yeah, it IS subtle, but there's subtle and then there's yeah, dead fish. And though the story was very political and it WAS just more removed from the personal that's more common in FF games, you STILL have to get the player interested in the characters, and that's where they fell short. To be honest, the only characters that I really clicked with were Fran and Balthier, and even them it took much longer than it should have for me to feel like they were more than cardboard cutouts.
Yes, yes, I desperately want someone to write the ending of the game. Like, where they deal with the Bahamut and then have to do something ELSE with the Occuria before they get to all the FMVness at the end.
