So, been rereading The Dark is Rising -- oh, my childhood, I'm so nostalgic. XD I think sometimes I'm not old enough for it, but hell, I'm in my third decade of life; if I want to look fondly back on the first two, I damn well will. XD
I finished rereading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory within three hours of picking it up again, which I mostly blame on having to put it down so I could participate in the writer's group. XD But it was nice -- there were huge passages I still remembered, and when I read the songs the Oompa-Loompas sing, I didn't actually remember the exact words -- but I remembered them, if it makes sense. I'm reminded of being in elementary school and the old battered copy I used to have and how I taped up the spine and sides when it fell apart because I loved that book and its sequel that much.
How d'you do? and how d'you do? and how d'you do again?
The movie looks like it'll either be wonderful, or too much -- I noticed that it looked like they're "updating" things (since Mike is playing what looks like a PS2), but hopefully, it'll keep the spirit of things.
Forget Rowling and Harry Potter -- Roald Dahl is forever and always, in my mind, the most brilliant "children's" author that ever lived♥
Also, I've heard rumors that they're making a movie version of The Dark is Rising -- can anyone deny or confirm this for me? Because if it's true, that is one movie I desperately need to NOT SUCK. Because just the first chapter reminded me how much I damn well love that series (not so much the first one, because I was never terribly enamored of the Drew children, in all honesty); I'm reminded of how much I really love the basic concept of a person being awakened to their true power/potential, when it's done RIGHT.
Ironically, I am not a fan of shoujo manga/anime; Princess Tutu is probably the only one that is "true shoujo" that I enjoy. I think it's because of the focus on the romance and relationships; in a book like The Dark is Rising, it's all about the adventure and the quest -- maybe my memory's fuzzy, but I think the closest this series got to romance was Bran offering Jane the stone he "found in his pocket."
On top of that, Merriman is cooler than any squishy cute mascot thingy any day. XD
Reading this book again reminds me that someday I want to write a story from the "other side" -- from the point of view of the mentor character who finds the child that is Destined To Save Us All; I want to write about the strange others that the growing "hero" runs into and shapes their development. Of course, that idea has a really depressing ENDING, as far as I've considered it, but that's beside the point♥ It'd be FUN -- the only problem is that I want to skip ahead and write all the exciting bits, without a care for the boring buildup. XD;
I'd also forgotten how young Will was, though -- maybe I'm too used to anime, where the young protagonist is at least a teenager, but no, he's eleven! An old eleven, but only eleven! Whut! XD
... also, I have a brand-new box of 96 Crayola Crayons. SOMEBODY TELL ME WHERE I CAN BUY A DECENT COLORING BOOK♥♥ I'm serious about this whole childhood-reclaiming thing, yo. XD
