There is all sorts of of absolutely blatant speculation here -- we don't see much of the original story Drosselmeyer wrote, so I sort of took with it and ran. I hope it still works!
Once upon a time, there was a shadow both to the prince's right and to the prince's left.
A/N: In Japanese fairytales, the convention starts with "mukashi mukashi" (essentially, "a long long time ago" -- the "once upon a time" of English convention), and ends with "medetashi, medetashi" which could be likened to "happily ever after."
But, this is set pre-series, and thus it's not quite so happily-ever-after yet; so the last line's been modified somewhat in recognition.
