I still think the coolest thing about "being an adult" is the whole autonomy over what I do and when I do it when it comes to socializing. So if, say, I come home from work and find zinjadu sitting in front of my door and going "dude, Harry Potter?" I can just toss my stuff down and head on back out without having to explain or justify or even really let anyone know where I'm going. (I mean, I did call my mom, but that was also a preplanned thing, and she would've fussed if I'd forgotten to call. Again.)

So, yes! Harry Potter movie -- I feel so accomplished; if not for my accomplices, there would be a very good chance I would not have seen it at all. 8Db But I'm glad I did, and it was definitely one of the cooler parts about being "adult." I mean, yeah, there's that whole job thing and the bills and the headaches, but there's also going to a movie and then holing up at a Red Robin afterwards with buddies and being. Kind of stupid, but that's par course♥

I also saw the Transformers movie yesterday, as part of a team outing (I can think of much worse things than an official company outing and being paid to see what was in fact a ver entertaining movie). Apparently I internalized more of the Transformers mythos from when I was a kid than I thought -- a lot of it was vaguely familiar in that tip-of-the-tongue (brain) sort of way.

The downside? I've seen the trailer for The Dark is Rising.

Christopher Eccleston, I do love you. But that trailer made me want to stab someone with the ice cream cone I was eating. :(

(I mean, okay, the friends I was with haven't read the book, so they agreed that it looked like a sort of generically cool fantasy movie. But as soon as I heard them going on about Will, Will, Will, I, I ... whut.)

And I still have roughly an hour before bedtime, so! Time to work on springkink stuff that's due Saturday. :Db

I saw the trailer when I went to Harry Potter today- I was sort of "huh, that might be okay" until I realized what the trailer was for and went "NO NO NO You're doing it wrong, please to be keeping things in the correct time period KTHX".

Apparently the dark takes the form of mall security? ._.

No, that's kind of how I was, too. :\ I was sort of "maybe I'll go see-- WHAT NO NO NO NO." My friend R kept making sympathetic noises as I twitched and protested and went GUYS NOOO.

Saw the Dark is Rising trailer at Harry Potter yesterday as well, and at first I just could. not. believe. that it was the right movie. For the first half of it I was going, well, maybe there's some other movie coming out with a kid named Will Stanton! And then the last half I was just watching through my fingers and flinching every two seconds. Because D: (my childhood~~~)

Also, reading down thread: what! How can they possibly be taking out the Arthurian elements?

(On a vaguely related note: it's really interesting how many people on my flist saw the trailer and are up in arms about this. I had no idea so many people had read the books!)

(Yus, Rider definitely = redhead. Not that I found him one of the most compelling characters in that set of books and remember way more about him than I do about anything else, but yes. ^_^)

Part of me wants to go see it for trainwreck value, but I'm terrified at the same time. D: This was like my childhood's version of Harry Potter (only nostalgia value and better writing = x50000), and now -- this.

wait what? It's been a long time since I read the books, but did they ever really get into the Black Rider's background? I mean, they did with the Walker, to some degree, but I thought that the Black Rider was always kind of a mystery?

Dammit, and I'm not sure if I have these books anymore or if I got rid of them in my last cleaning spree.... ._.

I think that yeah, we didn't really find out much about the Rider -- but obviously, he was not sexy sympathetic enough for Hollywood. :p

My old copies of the books are at my parent's house in Austin, but! I did buy a new copy of The Dark is Rising since that really was my favorite of the sequence.

I have failed to find the trailer anywhere online, though. Should I be prepared to cover my eyes? (I was just thinking about those books, too, because the Wild Hunt turns up in the Dresden Files books at one point as well...)

That's just a rumor I've heard, but it's the same one that said that the Rider would have a girlfriend, so.

I think the best part of "being an adult" is that we get to leave work at work. No worries about homework in the evenings or weekends. When we clock out, we are done and we are free to do whatever we want until it's time to clock in again. (And it's our own responsibility to make sure we get to bed on time ;))

When I saw The Dark Is Rising trailer, I was like *cry*. The director is known for being a bit... Er, Christian, which I wouldn't have a problem with, but everyone is saying he's going to be like, "Paganism? What paganism? *sweeps under rug*"

That and the whole thing was... Er. Gah. One. Of. Favorite. Series. Being. Eatin. Alive.

I'd heard about the director's ... tendencies, which sort of makes me wonder WHY he picked up this series in the first place, honestly. But as I understand it, they're excising the pagan elements AND all the Arthurian references (and how's that for shooting yourself in the foot, given how heavily the sequels rely on the Arthurian element).

I confess I'll probably go see it, but I will also concede I may get thrown out of the theater for constant yelling YOU CAN'T DO THAT or the ilk. T_T

Yeah, it's suppossed to be a beautiful mix of christianity/Arthurian christianity and paganism/Arthurian paganism. Geez.

Yeaaah, I think I'll probably "compromise." I'll probably end up downloading it, to see if by some miracle, the movie is decent... But if not, I've not given them any money and I don't get banned from one of the two theaters in Denton, Texas.

Hmm, even having not read the book, if I were doing designs and you told me their was a "Black Rider," I'd probably give him a black horse. That or make him African American, I suppose ^^;;.

When things we love are turned into bad movies, there are always sad fan feelings :O.

[nods] The majority of the "magic" in the books stems from this blend of Christianity and Celtic myth; the Rider is a messanger of the Dark, and the narration emphasizes how his horse is midnight-black, blacker than anything the main character has ever seen. There's an entire scene where the Rider confronts Will, and he's rescued by a pure white horse -- way to TOTALLY RUIN THE SYMBOLISM, MR. I AM MAKING THIS A CHRISTIAN MOVIE DIRECTOR-MAN.
