Moooostly this is because housemates foisted a new singer and her CD onto me yesterday, and because I've had people go :D about Great Big Sea at me before.
A happy-fun sampler pack!
Great Big Sea does a lot, lot, LOT of folksongs, which is honestly what really endeared them to me in the first place; these are updated-but-not, and they've got original songs too -- and hell, I even like their lovesongs, which is rare for me. Maybe it's the folksy bent; I couldn't say.
Ordinary Day -- which is like, my most-favorite song ever for the moment. It's the way I wish I could live, a lot of the time, but even when I can't, the song rarely fails to cheer me up. In this beautiful life there's always some sorrow / And it's a double-edged knife but there's always tomorrow / It's up to you now if you sink or swim / Just keep the faith that your ship will come in / It's not so bad.
The Chemical Worker's Song -- not reaaaally acapella (there are drums), but it's an unusual subject matter (it's exactly what it sounds), and the rhythm is pounding and grim even in harmonies. I think I'm a sucker for weird song subjects. And it's go boys go / They'll time your every breath / And every day you're in this place / You're two days nearer death / But you go ...
When I'm Up -- Sora. No, really, this has sort of become my "Sora themesong," because it's upbeat and happy, but there's still a bit thoughtful. (The other one I associate with Sora is also GBS, but I don't have an mp3 of it, unfortunately. "When I'm King," mostly for the final verse. XD) His exhaltation, a sweet disintegration / A few discolorations, then it comes along / Up is why he chooses, the kisses and the bruises / There ain't nothing he refuses, then it comes along ...
And then -- my flist seems to be fairly divided on Firefly into three camps: people who love it, people who despise it, and people who go "what's all the fuss about a bug who's butt glows in the dark?"
I would especially recommend Abigail Washburn to Firefly fans, but if you're into folkmusic, and if you're intrigued by Chinese-flavored Appalachian music and an honestly gorgeous voice, well. 8D
Eve Stole the Apple --
rivendellrose says this is a River song. I'm rather inclined to agree. Big brother told me I got something wrong / Big brother told me to sing a different song / Like a tolling bell in its final hour / I'll make a sound / Oh lord I'll make my sound.
Nobody's Fault -- ... I just like the sentiment. I had a mother who could pray / I had a mother who could pray / If I die and the soul be lost / Nobody's fault but mine.
Song of the Traveling Daughter -- Mostly for what feels like it SHOULD be dissonant, banjos and fiddles and a woman singing in Chinese, but somehow, I feel, really really works. (I have no idea how her accent is, but I like her voice, does that count?)
And last of all, Experimental Film by They Might Be Giants. Because we all need to make fun of the pretentiously artsy sometimes, even if we'd like to be that snotty ourselves. I already know the ending, it's the part that makes your face implode / I don't know what makes your face implode but that's the way the movie ends.
Songs can be downloaded HERE. Please let me know, blah blah blah, I hope you like them. 8D
(P.S. If anyone could get me a copy of Edwin McCain's "No Choice" [when the love spilled out they called it art] or a copy of "A Place In the Choir" [all god's critters got a place in the choir / some sing low, some sing higher], I would be muchly, muchly obliged for them♥)
