Because once in a while, I do real-life posts!
I'm sorry, I'll get back to fic after this. T^T
I went! I spentway too much money! I did not dare brave the lines for signings, so
sharky_chan, I'm sorry, I failed getting Nightow-sensei's signature. D: (His signing was at four, and the line was already long at noon. CRAZY MADNESS.) I, I'll figure something else out for your birthday present unless I'm totally lame and forget. D:
Mostly, this con was an exercise in hanging out with friends and oggling cosplayers. XD Also, delicious food. (I find it sad that I seem to only eat at the Cheesecake Factory maybe once a year. I feel I should go more often. DEAR SEATTLE PEOPLE: WHO CAN I CONVINCE TO COME WITH?) Doujinshi pickings were unfortunately slim, or maybe I've just become more picky? Well, that and most of the douj I want is all rare-fandoms. (Or, if it's a big fandom, I want the rare items -- there were woefully slim pickings for gen douj, and the yaoi section for Bleach had no Wacky 11th Division Antics that I could find. D: Swords and stupid guys [plus the bittiest thug of them all!] are totally my style, it seems.)
Also went to the fanfic awards with
coramegan, initially as moral support, and then as a congratulatory crew♥
AND THEN I MET PEOPLE WHO REMEMBERED ME FROM MY GUNDAM WING DAYS, OGOD. Which was sort of awesome, if also sort of surreal. If, uh, you're out there seeing this, I still don't exist! I am a figment of collective imagination.
Finally -- unrelated to con except for the whole "being anime" thing -- I watched the first half of "Otougizoushi" over the weekend. (Brief summary of the first half: Minamoto no Hikaru, the younger sister of Minamoto no Raikou [of legend] assumes his identity when he is struck down by illness, and is charged with retrieving the five elemental Magatama to save the dying capitol.) There are certain things I question or quibble, though the pacing issues could probably be chalked up to the first half being the Heian storyline, and the second half (apparently) being in modern-day Tokyo.
Hikaru is an interesting heroine, in that she seems to have very much internalized her "role" as her brother; while there's a certain amount of questionable accuracy that she could fight as well as she does when she's spent her entire life as a lady of the court (and the Minamoto family being what it was), I ... really liked the dichotomy of her character, and how different she is when she's being "Hikaru" and when she's being "Raikou." And while the half of her that is "Hikaru" is "romantically" weak and falters where her "Raikou" half does not, in the end, it's the part of her that is "Hikaru" that saves things.
UNTIL THE SECOND HALF, but.
If I'm honest, I think what bothered me most is that when Hikaru-is-Hikaru, dressed and herself as a lady in her father's house, there were no screens or veils or anything of the sort to hide her face. I don't remember when the tradition of a lady always hiding her face in the company of men went out of practice, but I know it was still in effect during the Heian era. (On the other hand, one could argue that the two men who saw her face and acknowledged her as a woman are the two who were in love with her.) Also interesting (for me) was the switch between Usui and Urabe -- traditionally (from what I know), if one of Raikou's attendants is portrayed as female, it's Usui no Sadamitsu; in the Otogizoushi anime, it's Urabe no Suetake that takes the role as the female fortune-teller.
It's ultimately yet another series with a very small fandom/following, I suspect, but interesting to check out, I think, if (like me) you're interested in the historical Minamoto no Raikou and his attending mythology. O tactics, it all comes back to you♥
... and now, to try and psyche myself up to returning to the real world (that is: work) tomorrow! My boss owes my team bagels, I'm looking forward to that much!
