So, like -- Watase Yuu. She of Fushigi Yuugi and Ayashi no Ceres fame.
She's got at least one explicit (well, artistically so, but that's definitely sex going on) BL story to her published name, and it's very recognizable as her style, and ... gosh.
FY was My First Anime, discounting dubbed Ranma, sooo...special place in my fangirl heart, always. And I seem to remember her asking fans for Tama/Tasuki dj but didn't know she'd actually crossed over...
OH SHE MOST CERTAINLY IS. That is totally Watase Yuu's name and art I'm seeing attached to this story.
I'm ... preeeeetty sure Fushigi Yuugi was my first subtitled, saw-it-the-whole-way-through anime. I always remember JOKING about subtext in her stuff, but ... dude.
Coupled with the fact that in Genbu Kaiden, the main male love interest turns into a girl when his power is triggered, I gotta say I'm pretty impressed!
Uh, I forget the name, BUT. There is a scanlation being done! Check out the yaoi_daily link I gave vinnydapoo earlier up; that'll link you to part 6/7 for the story (7/7 is supposed to be possted today).
SHEER HILARITY for me. The story's serious, but I can't stop laughing.
Oh good, so I'm not the only one who went "WTH?FTW!" when that got posted. XD Thinking about FY now, it WAS kind of gay in parts... Like the Nakago and Tamahome scene towards the end... And then there's Nuriko... *cries in a corner* But it's still surprising seeing her drawing outright yaoi...
So... GO YOU WATASE YUU! :D And all this talk about the awesomeness of Genbu Kaiden is really making me want to read it.
Oh, Fushigi Yuugi definitely had subtext going on, but Watase never actually DID anything with her m/m pairings, though she went pretty far(-ish) with the m/f sex. AND YET THERE IT WAS, and I laughed.
Genbu Kaiden is actually really good, and it surprised me! I can't take the old Fushigi Yuugi any more, but Takiko is actually an intelligent heroine, and her relationship with Uruki is a lot more poignant [and funnier, given that Uruki turns into a woman when he uses his power] in some ways. I like it! XD
Would it be bad if I said that makes me feel better? XD I'm glad it wasn't just me who didn't know!
It might be -- though I'd say she apologized for Miaka with Takiko in Genbu Kaiden. The boylove might just be her saying I GIVE UP, FINE, LET'S DO THIS.
I dunno if it's exactly "selling out" -- I remember she was very open to the idea of Tamahome/Tasuki back when the original Fushigi Yuugi was new(-ish), so it might be less of "selling out" and more of "giving into the inevitable."
... which, considering this is yaoi, is highly ironic and therefore even funnier to me. XD
Actually? There's less of the froofy romance -- this is like, your apparently-pure boy (with his own dark past, of course) enters a noble home to work as a servant while he goes to school, and discovers the noble home has lots of Dark Secrets and is molested by the Beautiful Young Master and there's a Creepy Reclusive Sister somewhere and a Mother Who Committed Suicide and ...
It's more Ayashi no Ceres than Fushigi Yuugi, I think is what I'm trying to say. XD
...Guh. Seriously? I've tried reading FY, but it didn't work for me. Not to mention the first volume I read was the one where the main character was pseudo-raped. What was her name again? XD
I read and watched Fushigi Yuugi looo~ooooooo~ooooong ago, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth I was an itty-bitty new fan. I liked it back then, but I was also in middle school, so maybe my judgement was totally off. XD (You're probably talking about Yui, though I know psuedo!rape happens to Miaka at some point in the story too. I forget.)
On the other hand, I think Watase's gotten better as a storyteller since then, or I'm less discerning than I always think I am. XD
SRSLY 4REELZ. I, I can't help but find this so very funny.
If you're part of the yaoi_daily community on LJ, they're posting scanlations there right now, in parts; 7/7 should be up today, and there are backlinks. :Db
LOL, yes, you're the only person I know who didn't know that. ^o^ I thought everyone knew (since the world worships her for some reason). I am not a fan of her art, so, err... wasn't that important to me. It's about time tho! You know she'd been practically wanting to draw it forever.
I dunno, it seems like there are enough other people who also didn't know that I feel better about it. XD I still have a lot of nostalgic fondness for her work (and I do like the Genbu Kaiden), so this was just really funny for me. XD The fact that the story itself is all dark quasi-victorian artsy stuff just makes it better. ♥
I've always had a strange sort of weakness for her art, despite the fact that she recycles her character designs over and over and over again. Every time I pick up one of her books I'm like, "Ah, Tamahome, we meet again! I see you've changed your clothes..." But it's still very pretty! So I guess I don't mind that much. ^^;
Her character designs are really recognizable and recycled -- it's actually how I recognized the boyporn as hers. I saw her name and couldn't believe it, and then I looked at the art and went "... okay, right, it is." XD But it IS pretty, and there is major hilarity factor in it even when the story is on the serious/dark side; I can't actually read the whole thing without snickering. [halo]
I'm willing to bet large amounts of money that at least one of the characters looks like Tamahome.
That being said, my favorite story of hers will always be Alice 19th. Because Frey rocks. And for once she didn't kill off my favorite character. Because really, Fushigi Yugi. You got ALL OF THEM.
So far, I think my favorite of her works is the Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden -- Takiko's actually a very intelligent heroine, and the Tamahome-lookalike of the series turns into a girl when using his powers. What's not to love. 8D
It IS pretty -- and while very different in "feel" from Fushigi Yuugi, is sort of reminiscent of Ayashi no Ceres with the whole family secrets and skeletons rattling around. :D

Perhaps this is her way of apologizing to the world for her horrendous creation that is Miaka?

This is so weird, because I'm just now getting my Fushigi Yuugi fanfiction formatted to go on my webpage. Coincidence? I THINK NOT.
