Sooooo, because I am bumming around (because my boss, in his infinite wisdom, gave me a whole crapton of stuff on my short days and nothing to do on my long days, so my day has mostly consisted of poking around the website and seeing what pictures are missing), I finished Thud! today.
I maintain, completely, that the more "domesticated" Vimes becomes, the more badass he gets. There are certain things that happen to him, or things he does, that would be "too much" for another other character -- or, really, by most other writers -- but that work for him because, well. He's Sam Vimes, damnit.
(After Night Watch, I thought that the Vimes books were sort of winding down -- I suppose that's more my fault, for thinking that Vimes, and Pratchett through him, would phase out. Haha. For a character that has, like, three actual lines in the entire book, Young Sam definitely leaves an impression.)
... I want to reread The Fifth Elephant, dude.
