... And now for today's edition of You Had To Have Been There (But I Don't Actually Know Either):

Coworker JS (male): "[blahblahblah long anecdote about when he was living in New York] ... And that's when my cat got me pregnant."

BUNNY: *flees faster*

Ahaha, agreed! There hasn't been a really good body-horror film since The Fly; carnivorous cat-humans are as good a plot as any. They'd probably have seriously disturbing meows, too. :D Might end up permanently scarring legions of innocent catboy/catgirl fans, tho.

Ooh, ooh, I think I remember you writing a bit about that--something with a Fatal Frame-ish feel, but without the cameras and packing in as many of the traditional Japanese ghosts/bakemono as possible? Especially the bakeneko/nekomata? I still want that game to exist, damn it.

Does this make me a terrible person.

Haha, probably not--fans ought to be able to acknowledge the weird/dark/creepy parts of their favorite trope even if they personally prefer to think about the happy and guilt-free parts, and the catperson thing is really no exception.

I'm just butting in to say I wish I were a gazillionaire so I could FINANCE THIS HORROR-GAME DESIGNING. ♥ Man, I've been wishing there were more horror games based on Japanese folklore and/or mythology for ages... the only ones that come close that I can think of are the Fatal Frames and Kuon, and those really only scratch the surface.

Really? Well hey, I've got a copy of Kuon that I'm done with. If you want, I could send it to you? :D

I gotta be honest, though: most people don't seem to like the gameplay. The battle system IS a bit slow and clunky, and things get kinda repetitive after a while. It's also rather short -- I think I finished it in about 10 hours on my first playthrough. But the setting/atmosphere is gorgeously creepy, and the story is pretty neat for the most part. I'd say it's worth playing at least once if you're a Heian-era Japan/folklore nut and can overlook the potential gameplay issues. And you'd be getting it for free, anyway. :D

BUT OF COURSE I MEAN IT. ♥ And I totally understand the Heian-era crushing, hohoho. Just let me know your address (my email is marcelwaves at gmail.com), and I'll have it out to you sometime this week~

*barges into the thread* Oh, do play Kuon if you get the chance! The gameplay is, as [livejournal.com profile] vaulted_eel says, unfortunately repetetitive--you go through the game as three characters, but they didn't really change any of the locations, so it's replaying and backtracking over the same territory--but the designs for the the Heian-era clothes and rooms are beautiful enough that you don't really mind backtracking, and it's all marvelously atmospheric. And they left in the option to play with original Japanese voices!

Also it has tiny twin children singing an uber-creepy little song, which I personally always consider a plus.

...I'm still a little weirded out that the localization turned Abe no Seimei into a girl, but whatever! :|
