Nnnnnot my best month ever. AND IT'S BARELY BEGUN, WHAT IS UP WITH THAT.
LONG STORY SHORT: on Friday, it was publically announced that the company I work for (previously privately-owned) was sold! Business will continue as usual for the next month or so, while the deal is officially closed, and THEN MAYBE WE WILL FIND OUT THE STATE OF THINGS! My parents have been exactingly practical about it, which is stuff I needed to hear, but do not really help with the worry. I know, there's not much I can do, even if I'm panicking, and mostly I am doing all right with that, but ugh. EASIER SAID THAN DONE! And my first mortgage paymet is due next month, l-lol, so I am possibly panicking juuuust the tiniest bit. It's a very contained sort of panic, that involves zoning out and obsessively keeping tabs on the amounts in my accounts and juggling to the largest interest rate. On top of that, my cat has been doing some worrisome things that I need to keep an eye on and have my fingers crossed that things were just a fluke, and that he's not actually sick.
I suspect this is why I am feeling vaguely sick this week, but WHO KNOWS. Maybe it's just a summer cold, lol.
This has also sort of colored ... everything I've been doing/thinking/whatever so I'm just feeling super worn-down and sad about a lot of things. It's one of those days (weeks? something?) where you just want to go to the most public forum you can and say EVERYONE PLEASE LIKE ME, I AM HAVING A BAD DAY!--only I'm not sure how deserved everyone liking me is, right now. *wg* MY PERSPECTIVE IS SKEWED. Also I usually try to reserve actual outright attention whoring for my birthday, because then I feel less guilty about it. It's a lot of little things that have sort of come together and one-two-three'd me, so I feel sort of like a bad friend, an uninteresting person, insert negative thing here.
AND IN A WAY I GUESS I AM ATTENTION WHORING RIGHT NOW! But you can tell me the bad as well as the good; I've sort of hit the zen threshhold of bad feelings, so at least I am at a starting point to try fixing things. *g* Or just talk to me about things. TELL ME ABOUT A NEW FANDOM YOU LOVE, a book you've read, talk to me about something I've talked about before! Give me something to focus on so I don't sit around being 8( and maybe I will actually EAT THE DELICIOUS FOOD I BOUGHT.*
The one major upside is that IF THINGS GO WELL, in six months, I will have the best commute in the history of ever--fifteen minutes tops, and that's when I'm weighed down by heavy grocery bags. I timed it. Kya kya etc.

SO I AM WATCHING LEGEND OF THE LEGENDARY HEROES and actually quite liking it. It has a Slayers-y vibe of Fighter + Mage Are Adventuring, Look At Them Adventure but there are hints of more complex and interesting things (after two episodes); also, I'm fond of most of the cast at this point (and am probably apping the main character somewhere.)

LEGEND OF THE LEGENDARY HEROES SOUNDS--well okay, I laughed at the title alone, is that bad. :( ARE THEY ON A QUEST?

I watch a lot of TV lately. I just finished Legend of the Seeker, which is basically Hercules and Xena's love child, with more lesbian kissing and arrow-time.
AND I LOVE YOU.

I'm seconding Timmy's Legend of the Seeker rec. It's a really fun show! PROOF:
As for books, I've gotten into Megan Whalen Turner's "Queen's Thief" series. I love the alternate-universe brasspunk Greek-esque pantheon. It's good stuff and I'm just starting on the latest book /o/ \o\

... that is a super-cute gif, and damn if the actor doesn't remind me of like. Tidus. Somehow. :|a
I AM TOTALLY PINGED BY ALTERNATE PANTHEONS, sob, and I really need to get back into the book-reading habit. (Especially since I live really close to the library now. :|a) I need something to fill the Expendable hole in my heart. :(

BUT NO.
LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT GAY THINGS INSTEAD. I grabbed Uragiri wa boku no... something something NAME TOO LONG. Which is about fighting demons, good vs evil, etc etc but with BL tones. Both anime and manga are v. pretty. I also grabbed Monochrome Factor which is a lot of fun! They have to restore the balance between light and shadow, the main lead is annoying but everyone else is awesome. THERE IS ALSO AN ANIME which they made BL even though the manga is super straight. The anime is terrible, but you can watch it if you like terrible things.

I ENJOYED THE FIRST FOUR VOLUMES OF MONOCHROME FACTOR! Then for some reason Kinokuniya stopped having it and I haven't ordered the rest. The anime has Suwabe Jun'ichi gaying it up with Ono Daisuke, so I just went and downloaded BL dramas with them. It was nearly the same.

I just got back from seeing the Sorcer's Apprentice, which I'm going to say was fair to midling with a solid baseline of adorable/funny/badass, so I'm going to quote this out of context at you:
"Go...put on the old man shoes, we have work to do."

It feels to me like we don't have a super lot in common, definitely not fandom-wise (not anymore), but at the same time I have a neverending fondness for you. So... *rolls up sleeves*. I'm sure I have some blather to offer.
Um, books... let's see, I recently read "Cognitive Surplus" by Clay Shirky, which is all about how the massive power of the internet is toppling everything but more specifically, is about how interactivity and sociability are inate aspects of human behavior.
It's a really interesting book! Basically the idea is that humans are built to be social creatures but over the last century or so, various demographic changes have made it so people were finding it harder to connect with their real life neighbors and family, and worse, with increasing industrialization, ended up having loads of free time. Having lots of time to do stuff in, but without easy access to people to do things with, TV ended up taking over people's lives because it was a kind of comforting (but pale) substitute for the socialization we were lacking.
But now with the internet, which is an interactive medium, we are finding ways to reclaim our free time. People find value in making things and being part of a community, and with the capacities of the internet we can all do stuff that we never did before. He talks some about group effects, which is something he went into in greater detail in his previous book, "Here Comes Everybody," but here he spends more time talking about how groups of people who come together on the the internet through shared interests/concerns can end up doing awesome things. Like all these fans of... I think it was Josh Grobin?... who ended up creating this charity which raises tons of money for various charities. I'd imagine that all the Help Haiti and Gulf Aid auctions we see on LJ are a similar phenomenon. The reason they succeed in helping a good cause is because they create a culture where sharing is a part of being social. It's not just about raising money but about people interacting with each other, and also for the sense of accomplishment that goes to all the people who organize, or who donate art or writing or whatever.
I'm suspecting this is a rather punch-drunk seeming comment since I'm coming off an exhausting overnighter at work, where I saw tons of patients, so please forgive whatever incomprehensibility you see. It's
probablynot intentional!!!Anyway. Feel better! HERE ARE MANY SPOONY HUGS FROM ME.

New fandoms! Though KH still owns a large part of my brain, I've been taking breaks to read Fullmetal Alchemist and Rurouni Kenshin (finally! After about the rest of the world). If you have knowledge of them and would like to fangirl a bit, do let me know~ Avatar the Last Airbender is awesome as well.
I've been rereading the Earthsea books, which are wonderful, but have some aspects I'm starting to see as having Unfortunate Implications. :/ I do love the worldbuilding and the characters are great. On the other hand y'know, when all the good, powerful magic-users are men, and the only place where women have a lot of power/control is evil, I start to wonder a few things.

So when I was on vacation the cruise ship had a library. And said library had several books from Garth Nix's Keys to the Kingdom series: Mister Monday, Grim Tuesday, Drowned Wednesday, and Sir Thursday.
I plowed through four books in four days. Well, two, since two of those days were spent off the boat and I didn't want to risk bringing the books with me. The series is a really fun and imaginative read, and it's saying something that I was so eagerly reading a book called Drowned Wednesday while on a boat in the middle of the ocean. (Actually, I just now realized the irony of that. It didn't connect for me then, I was enjoying the story too much.)

Haha, I think the most ironic book-reading I ever did was when I was reading the chapter on airplane deaths in Stiff when I was flying home to visit my parents earlier this year. :B It was a really interesting chapter, and Mary Roach is a fabulous writer, but there was this certain point where I stopped and went WHAT AM I DOING OH WELL, TURN THE PAGE.
I have not read Garth Nix's stuff, but I love the titles for the Keys to the Kingdom series. :[
