Apparently, there is a pow-wow going on right outside, in a few houses down from us.

No, seriously. There's drums and people are whooping and cheering and doing those cheesy fake "Indian yells."

Once upon a time, in the '70s, there was a billboard in California. It said: "All hippies go to Vashon Island." I am not kidding.

...Perhaps this offers some semblance of an explanation? ^^;

It's true. But some of them got lazy (and stoned) when they realized how far Vashon is, and stopped in Wallingford to create the wonderful sub-city we now know and love...
